Deep red, cranberry-tart, caffeine-free — hibiscus is the most drunk flower tea on earth, from Egypt’s karkade to Mexico’s agua de jamaica.
What is hibiscus tea good for?
Hibiscus petals are rich in anthocyanins and vitamin C, and the flower has a long traditional record for heart and skin wellness. Modern drinkers love it for the same reason ancient ones did: a tart, cooling, antioxidant-dense cup.
What does it taste like?
Bright and tangy — closer to cranberry than to “floral”. Beautiful hot; even better iced with a little honey, and a natural base for caffeine-free coolers.
How do I brew it?
1 tsp whole petals, 200 ml water just off the boil, 5 minutes. For iced: brew double-strength, chill, pour over ice with lime.
Quick facts
• Naturally caffeine-free and deep red — no colouring involved.
• Anthocyanins + vitamin C give it the antioxidant reputation.
