Butterfly Blue Pea Tea: Benefits, Brewing and the Colour Trick

Blue tea isn’t a filter. Butterfly pea flowers brew a genuinely deep-blue cup — and a squeeze of lime turns it violet in front of you.

What is butterfly blue pea tea good for?

Blue pea is rich in anthocyanins — the same antioxidant family as blueberries. In Ayurvedic tradition it’s known as a brain herb, long used for memory and calm; modern drinkers reach for it as a caffeine-free focus and skin cup.

Why does it change colour?

Anthocyanins are pH-sensitive. Acid from lime shifts the brew from blue to violet — chemistry you can watch, and the reason it’s the most photographed tea on Instagram.

How do I brew it?

5–6 whole flowers per cup, water just off the boil, 5 minutes. Drink it blue, or add lime for the show and a brighter taste.

Quick facts
• Naturally caffeine-free — an any-hour cup.
• The blue comes from anthocyanin antioxidants, not colouring.
• Whole flowers re-steep well; a second infusion still colours the cup.
